casefic 2026
2026-02-01 - Letter mostly done, I might fuss with it a little more through close of sign-ups, but there shouldn't be any major changes.
Hello and happy case fic exchange!!
This letter doesn't expand that much on my AO3 sign-up -- there are mostly just a few more notes about what I love about the fandoms I'm signed up for, and stuff organized a little more cleanly than AO3 allows. To riff on something from Rivers of London, read without obligation. Treats are welcome.
Requested pairings: Kim Kitsuragi/Harry du Bois
Harry in DE really exemplifies one of the things that makes me love procedurals/detective stories/case fic so much -- this character whose life has fallen apart whose world is kind of literally ending in slow motion but he still needs to crack the case. To figure out what happened, to put things together.
Kim & Harry working together for the first time since joining Precinct 41 -- for another case in Martinaise.
Someone steals Kim's kineema and it must be recovered. That car is too cool to be left in criminal hands. Either it's an official RCM case, or Kim and Harry investigate informally.
A series of murders where the bodies are left in the Pale, making it hard, once they're found, for the RCM to investigate the way they usually would. A serial killer, or a gang just covering their tracks more cleverly than usual, or something else entirely?
Requested pairings: Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale, Beverly Brook/Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale
The RoL series is a special one for me. I love Peter's moral clarity and high standards -- the way he inherently and immediately challenges Nightingale to be more engaged with the world, to do things a better way, is, to me, the heart of their dynamic. The ways they change each other are just really fascinating and satisfying. I love the ways Beverly does and doesn't change -- she's wonderful because she may have this inherent power and connection to magic by virtue of being a genius loci, but at the start of the series she's still so young, really, despite having all these centuries of memories.
For Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale, I'm fine with canon divergence AUs where Peter and Beverly never got together, or where they broke up at the end of Lies Sleeping (and no kids on the way.) For Beverly Brook/Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale, I usually think of them as a V-shaped OT3, with Beverly and Nightingale not being romantically involved, but that's not a strict preference! Post-MoS I interpret Nightingale as demiromantic/demisexual, but I'm happy to read other interpretations, including ace Nightingale.
Peter or Nightingale ends up touching a cursed artifact at a crime scene, and the other person has to track down where the artifact came from and how to lift the curse. Some random ideas: it dampens magic, or causes pain when the person who touched it uses magic; it causes the person who touched it to have non-stop nightmares every time they sleep; it attracts ghosts.
In an AU where Peter and Beverly break up after Lies Sleeping, a different undercover case than False Value -- maybe Peter and Nightingale have tracked down another ethically challenged practitioner and they plan to take him down by Peter pretending to defect like Lesley did?
Would be thrilled with any gender configuration you feel like for the OW prompts, including opting in xenogender characters or characters who use neopronouns.
Android/Human Detective/Outlaw -- I am a simple creature and I love a story where someone on the "right" side of the law and someone on the "wrong" side of the law realize everything's all messed up and their only hope of getting out of this mess alive is by joining forces!!! I love all flavors of science fiction and cyberpunk and what have you. Maybe a human detective is chasing an android who killed their owner, and it turns out they had a really good reason, or an android programmed to to be merciless can't help but respect the human outlaw they're chasing -- and something bigger and badder is chasing both of them.
Werewolf Stuck in Wildlife Rehabilitation Center/Staff Member… what a concept… What got the werewolf stuck in that wildlife rehabilitation center? Does a werewolf have a good enough sense of smell to act like a police bloodhound?? Did someone steal a bird from the wildlife rehabilitation center and the staff member is unconsolable and a werewolf that had been sheepishly trying to recover without giving themself away finds the whole scene so pathetic they end up revealing themself and offering to help?
Seasoned Paranormal Investigator/Seasoned Non-Believing Private Investigator - Forced to work together for the first time? Hired by the same client? Hired by competing clients? Is this the case that finally makes the non-believer believe? What toolkit is the paranormal investigator usually using while the non-believing investigator is doing boring things like staking out a seedy motel?
Requested pairings: Adam Dalgliesh/Kate Miskin
I still kind of can't believe how much I enjoy the 2021 Dalgliesh adaption -- it did an unbelievable job turning these very cynical, bitter books into a show about a few very wounded, vulnerable characters who are still trying the best that they can. (Well, Dalgliesh and Miskin, at least. Not Masterson.) I love Carlyss Peer's Miskin so much, and the way the show portrays their weird charged tender relationship -- in an interview Carvel has a line about how Miskin sort of holds a key to Dalgliesh's private, secret heart in a way no one else does.
Someone has been sending death threats to Adam Dalgliesh (poet.) It's not really the done thing for Adam Dalgliesh (police officer) to be leading the investigation into death threats sent to himself, and Miskin is on the team investigating/bodyguarding/etc.
